ANIMA MUNDI - The Way (2010)

Een heerlijke symfonische traktatie ...

... is het derde album van het Cubaanse gezelschap Anima Mundi en het betekent hun doorbraak in de wereld van de progrock. Laat je echter niet op het verkeerde been zetten door de afkomst, want we kunnen luisteren naar onversneden symforock in de beste Europese traditie. Van de muzikale invloeden is die van Yes het duidelijkst hoorbaar in de gitaarfills van opperhoofd Roberto Diaz en het basspel van Yaroski Corredera. Daarnaast laat Virginia Peraza in 'Flying to the Sun' een minutenlange kerkorgelpartij horen die herinneringen oproept aan Rick Wakeman's spel in 'Awaken'.
Het album telt vier nummers, waarbij de twee langste en meest complexe composities het begin vormen. De zang is sterk, maar de stukken ontlenen hun charme vooral aan de prachtige instrumentale gedeelten. Veel afwisse- ling tussen gitaar en toetsen, tussen gedrevenheid en kalmte, immer melodieus. In algemene zin valt verder de opnamekwaliteit op en daarin vooral de robuustheid van het toetsengeluid. Eindelijk eens synthesizers in hun volle glorie.
Opener 'Time to Understand' is steviger van opzet dan het grootse 'Spring Knocks on the Door of Man'. Dit is de muzikale verbeelding van een fantasy-achtige legende, waarvan de eerste minuten een klassiek stempel krijgen en dan ... bij mijlpaal 11.40 begint Diaz rustig aan een gitaarsolo, die zich langzaam ontvouwt tot bij 13.54 Peraza haar synths er aan toevoegt. De hemel breekt open bij 14.18, waarna de twee om elkaar heenstrengelen in liefdevolle extase. Zo! Dat is voor het eerst in lange tijd dat symfonische rock bij mij de rillingen over het lijf doet lopen en de tranen zich merkbaar achter de ogen roeren. Het nummer dooft uit, krijgt een doorstart en dit proces herhaalt zich alsof de band er maar geen einde aan wil maken. En geef ze eens ongelijk.
Slotnummer 'Cosmic Man' is toegankelijker en dan denk je 'jammer', maar het eindigt gelukzalig in een symfonisch thema dat Diaz zeven keer herhaalt, terwijl het makkelijk tot in de eeuwigheid zou kunnen doorklinken. Heerlijk! Peter Swart (wat een week 51)

MACHINE MASS TRIO - As Real as Thinking (2011)

Het is even doorbijten ...

... bij deze nieuwe Moonjune-release van het Machine Mass Trio een band met gitarist Michel Delville van het geweldige The Wrong Object, Tony Bianco op drums en Jordi Grognard op o.a. tenor-sax en fluit.
Het doorbijten wordt veroorzaakt door de taaie mengeling van vrij tradi- tionele jazz met relatief toegankelijke jazz-rock en met nogal ontoegan- kelijke experimentele, avant-garde jazz-rock. Of andersom zoals u wilt. Het album vereist dan ook meerdere luistersessies en daar moet je bij dit soort muziek maar net voor in de stemming zijn. Het is mij evenwel gelukt en dan ontluiken, wat een veel te zachtaardig woord is voor deze muziek maar u begrijpt vast wat ik bedoel, langzamerhand de kwaliteiten van de compo- sities.
Opener 'Cuckoo' en 'Hero' - ieder rond de tien minuten - refereren aan de jazz-rock van Soft Machine ten tijde van Holdsworth en Etheridge en vallen vrij snel op hun plek, zeker ook door de lekkere grooves. Het etnische met 'inheemse' instrumenten, zoals de electronic tempura en de bansouri, gelardeerde rustige 'Khajurao' vindt uiteindelijk ook zijn plaats op mijn mentale harde schijf. Lastiger is dat bij de achttien minuten experiment van 'Falling Up' en het rommelige en stuurloze 'Knowledge'. Maar wat wil je als je alles opneemt in een dag.
Kortom, ik werd nogal eens heen en weer geslingerd bij beluistering van 'As Real as Thinking' maar kom per saldo op een voldoende uit. Voor de 'die-hard' liefhebber van avant-garde jazz(rock) komt de score hoger uit denk ik. Harry 'JoJo' de Vries (wat een week 49)

'Psychedelisch' is niet de eerste associatie die opkomt bij de Britse folk(rock) formatie Fairport Convention. Toch is dat een passende benaming bij de muziek op de onlangs verschenen dubbel CD 'More Things We Did On Our Holidays'.
De titel verwijst naar het legendarische tweede bandalbum 'What We Did On Our Holidays' (1969), met daarop een van de meest huiveringwekkende folksongs aller tijden 'Fotheringay'. De zangeres die dat nummer groot maakte, de schitterende Sandy Denny, overleed in 1978 na een val van de trap. Zij is hier dan ook niet te horen want dit album bevat compilaties van de Crophedy Festivals in 1986 en 1987. Wel horen we een groot aantal andere leden van de eerste bandlichtingen zoals Richard Thompson, Dave Swarbrick, Iain Matthews, Dave Mattacks, David Pegg en natuurlijk Simon Nicol, het enige bandlid van het eerste uur die nog steeds deel uitmaakt van de band.
Deze driedaagse jaarlijkse festivals worden georganiseerd door Fairport, die zelf ook optreden, evenals allerlei gast-artiesten. Zo is bijvoorbeeld Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson regelmatig gast, ook op deze compilaties. Er zijn heel wat uitgaven van de verschillende Crophedy-concerten, zowel op CD als op DVD, en deze zijn, hoewel de kwaliteit van jaar tot jaar nogal eens verschilt, qua sfeer onovertroffen.
Wat op deze uitgave opvalt, met name op de 1986-versie, is het hoge psychedelische gehalte van vele songs. Een belangrijk aandeel op dit punt wordt geleverd door Iain Mattews die met zijn frêle, breekbare stem bij voorbaat al psychedelisch klinkt zoals in 'Reno Nevada', 'Keep on Sailing', 'Suzanne' en 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes. Luister nog maar eens naar zijn albums met Matthews Southern Comfort en vooral naar de onderschatte band Plainsong.
Het hoogtepunt van psychedelische folk is echter het ruim zeventien minuten durende 'Sloth' van 'Full House' (1970), het eerste album zonder Sandy Denny. Oorspronkelijk een ruim negen minuten durende exponent van wat voor het eerst folkrock werd genoemd: een opzwepend naar een climax toegroeiend stuk dat traditionele folkmelodieën combineerde met rockritmes. Deze live-versie begint aanvankelijk traditioneel, zoals op 'Full House', maar groeit langzaam toe naar een orgie van experimentele geluiden waarin de oorspronkelijke traditionele folk-instrumenten (viool, akoestische gitaar) worden geflankeerd door de meest bizarre synthesizer- en gitaarnoises: een waar psychedelisch underground feest!
De tweede schijf, met opnames van het festival in 1987, klinkt traditio- neler. De stukken zijn voor het merendeel bijzonder sfeervol, niet in de laatste plaats doordat violist-vocalist Dave Swarbrick acte de presence geeft o.a. in 'Rosie'. De van 'Liege at Lief' (1969), het standaardalbum voor folkrock, afkomstige medley met o.a. 'The Lark in the Morning' doet weer verlangen naar de tijd van het ontstaan van de folkrock: heerlijke traditionele folk maar dan elektrisch gespeeld! Op 'Serenade to a Cuckoo' horen we Ian Anderson, waarschijnlijk uitgenodigd door zijn bandmaat David Pegg, in zijn bekende stijl zijn dwarsfluit verkrachten.
Niet alle nummers van 'More Things We Did On Our Holidays’ kunnen de vergelijking doorstaan met de oorspronkelijke versies, maar de sfeer die uit deze Crophecy schijfjes spreekt maakt de aanschaf de moeite waard. Althans voor de (psychedelische) folkrock liefhebber! Henk Vermeulen (12-2012)
